WISH joins global commitment to gender equality among health workers
Doha: The World Health Innovation Summit (WISH), an initiative of the Qatar Foundation (QF), joined the commitment to gender equality in the health workforce at an event virtual event organized by the Government of France, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Women in Global Health (WGH), entitled Gender Equal Health and Workforce Initiative (GEHWI).
The event brought together speakers and participants from various governments and major global organizations, including Sultana Afdhal, CEO of WISH, who made the pledge on behalf of QF’s global health initiative.
Other speakers included HE Olivier Véran, French Minister for Solidarity and Health, Jim Campbell, Director of Health Workforce, WHO, and Stéphanie Seydoux, French Ambassador for Global Health.
As the first entity in the Middle East to commit to this commitment, WISH aims to increase the representation of women in leadership roles and promote advocacy for their contributions within the health sector.
Sultana Afdhal, CEO of WISH, said: “As an organization working in global health, we are keenly aware of the vital role women play in the health workforce. Women represent more than 50% of frontline health workers, so it is essential that they are better represented at the management level.
“Considerable efforts still need to be made to ensure that women are fully part of decision-making processes, and the Gender Equality Initiative in Health and Health Care represents an important step on this path. “
For WISH and QF, this commitment builds on a commitment made by HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice President and CEO of the Qatar Foundation, in 2019, where HE Sheikha Hind announced a commitment for women to represent at least half of the speakers. at conferences and events, local and international.
WISH continues to advance in this area and has over 50% female speakers at all events, with 75% women on its advisory board. Going forward, WISH will continue to take concrete steps with the support of the Qatar Foundation to ensure that gender is not a barrier to anyone’s development and that everyone is recognized as well.
The Gender Equality in Health and Workforce Initiative aims to promote the implementation of actions around four key priorities. These include increasing the proportion of women working in health and health care in leadership positions, recognizing the value of unpaid health and care work and the importance of equal pay in the health and social service sectors, to protect women in health care and care against harassment and violence at work, among others.
