Vanderbilt Women’s Tennis | Dores Excel in Duplicate

GREENVILLE, South Carolina – Day 2 of the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Invitational featured a strong doubles performance from the Vanderbilt Women‘s Tennis Team. The Commodores went 2-1 in doubles Saturday.

“Overall we fought hard again today, but we missed some close matches in some very close matches, Vanderbilt head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “Marcella (Cruz) and Bridget (Stammel) battled it out to win their doubles final against a really good Duke team – super happy with how they closed out this match. CB (Celia-Bella Mohr) and Ness (Anessa Lee) also played some great doubles to earn a second win this weekend in the duos. Our freshmen were once again truly impressive today. Bridget had a great game with an experienced player at Shvets (transfer 5th grader from Princeton) and pulled off a tough threesome Sonya (Macavei) battled to a straight sets win over Duke rookie Katie Codd We lost a few tight sets in the breakers and two bouts of three sets for Holly (Staff) and CB but again we thought we fought hard. Day 3 tomorrow will be a good physical test to see where we are in that regard and hopefully we we can enjoy beautiful ops individual ports.

Marcella Cruz and Bridget Stammel won their double-handed steal in comeback fashion. Trailing Duke’s Emma Jackson and Brianna Shvets by a score of 5-2, the Cruz/Stammel duo came back strong to claim an 8-6 win to win Group Flight 3.

In Vol 1 doubles, Anessa Lee teamed up with Celia-Belle Mohr for an 8-2 win over Furman’s Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder.

The Commodores picked up a pair of singles wins that day thanks to their freshmen. Competing in Vol 4, Stammel battled to a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over Shvets. Fellow freshman Sonya Macavei also won her Flight 5 singles match by a score of 6-2, 6-4 over Katie Codd of Duke.
