Upstate New York Black & Latino Pride Prepare for Pursuit of Pride
BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) – A new initiative seeks to showcase the contributions of blacks and brunettes within the queer community. Upstate New York Black & Latino Pride is hosting its first Pursuit of Pride week to help bring intersectionality to the forefront of the conversation.
“It’s important to focus on the different needs of the community and create comfortable spaces for everyone to learn and grow,” said Taje Jenkins-Jones, Founder of UNY Black & Latino Pride. “I think back to being a young black gay man in Buffalo and what I would have needed.”
The goal is to help marginalized people find their voice.
“We go through various social and political changes and often when we look at queer or trans issues people of color are erased and instead of being an afterthought in those events they are now the headliners,” said Alexandre Burgos-Gonzalez. , the organization’s communications director.
The festivities will include a range of events from a “Thoughtful Thursday” to show off different techniques that help combat everyday trauma, to a ballroom dance masterclass.
And these are not your grandmother’s two stages.
“It’s a Cinderella extravaganza,” Burgos-Gonzalez said. “It’s where we dive, where we spin, where we turn, where we come together to have a good time, but also a place where we come together to uplift our communities.”
As POP focuses on the very specific needs of Queer / Trans communities of color, Burgos Gonzalez says it’s important to know that everyone is welcome.
“When you come to our events, your whole being is accepted here. Your sexual orientation, gender identity, social mobility, disabilities, abilities or class. Everybody is welcome here. “
