New program encourages women in the food industry
The Women in Food and Agriculture Mentorship Program was inspired by the results of an Alltech-supported workplace equity survey
NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ / Press Release) – Guided by feedback from latest survey of women in food and agriculture (WFA), Alltech turns knowledge into action by partnering with WFA to connect women across the food industry with mentors to champion their career success. The Mentorship program for women in food and agriculture will facilitate meaningful conversations and professional development while providing a valuable networking experience.
“Growing up in the family business, every day has been a lesson in leadership,” said Dr. Mark Lyons, President and CEO of Alltech. “Mentors, including my father (the founder of Alltech, Dr. Pearse Lyons), have been an invaluable resource in challenging and championing my personal and professional development. While the power of mentorship is evident, and even as the future of agriculture and food becomes more inclusive, nearly 70% of women working in agriculture globally are report a lack of access to mentors. Through this unique agri-food mentoring program, women will have the opportunity to cultivate industry connections that will foster their success.
The application process to join the WFA Mentorship Program is open to mentors and mentees until January 31, 2022. Potential participants can indicate their preferences, such as language, agricultural sector and regional location. Since male champions are an asset in promoting gender equality, men are also welcome to apply to become mentors.
After the application phase, the organizers will match pairs of mentors, who will meet virtually for an hour each month starting in March. This manageable time commitment is intended to promote flexibility and accessibility for busy participants. With support from Alltech, the program is free.
“We are delighted to have Alltech’s support for the WFA Mentorship Program,” said Ollie Theocharous, Content Manager at WFA. “Their partnership will allow us to take the program to the next level as we continue our mission of supporting diversity in the industry. “
Alltech believes inclusion cultivates creativity, drives innovation and is central to the company’s vision of Working Together for a Planet of Plenty.MT. In 2019, Alltech selected gender equality as one of the nine United Nations Sustainable Development Goals the company is committed to advancing towards.
To help guide a journey towards meaningful change, Alltech started by listening. In 2019 and 2020, the Women in Food & Agriculture survey, supported by Alltech, collected concrete information on the current working environment and future prospects. Survey results now serve as a valuable reference tool for the agri-food industry as it strives to become more inclusive and create concrete solutions to the challenges faced by women in agriculture.
