Dr Jill Biden wears one of her favorite designers to meet the Pope

When you’re America’s First Lady, it helps to have a few rock-solid figures and designers to fall back on for special occasions (I’m guessing here, since I’ve never been the FLOTUS before). Former First Lady Michelle Obama preferred colorful cardigans and dresses with bare arms, for example. Although this is early in her tenure as first lady, Dr Biden appears to be living by the axiom “when in doubt, go for an Adam Lippes suit”.

Today, for a meeting with the Pope at the Vatican, Dr Biden opted for a navy sheath dress and blazer from Lippes, made of a textured fabric that offered some visual interest. She teamed the outfit with navy suede heels and, as usual, a black lace veil. Her husband, President Joe Biden, wore a dark blue suit and tie.

Dr Biden’s ensemble was the same figure she wore to meet Queen Elizabeth II. In June, she wore a powder blue suit with the same fitted skirt just below the knee and the same one-button blazer, also from Adam Lippes. As she met the Queen for tea, the pastel color palette was perfectly appropriate; she and the monarch, who wore pink, would have appeared at home in an Easter basket. This event made Lippes, an independent American designer known for her sophisticated feminine and feminine clothing, one of her favorites. She had already worn the designer’s clothes for an Air Force 1 flight and for an Equal Pay Day ceremony. Here FLOTUS tacitly gives out some great fashion advice: When you find a figure that suits you, wear it over and over again.
