“Like the rest of society, the Spanish banking sector is a sector with enormous challenges in terms of equality, and at the same time, it is an area full of opportunities, where female talent has a lot to contribute. at all levels. Women in Banking was born precisely to encourage banks to take advantage of these opportunities, said Elena Alfarohead of data and advanced analytics at BBVA and representative of the bank on the women’s committee of the AEB.

The project was presented in the form of two round tables attended by the two founders of the WIB initiative, including Maika Adrio of the BBVA, as well as representatives of the women‘s committee of the AEB, with Elena Alfaro on behalf of the BBVA. These round tables made it possible to highlight the importance of the association, to reflect on the objectives it will pursue and to identify the challenges faced by women in the banking sector. “As social actors, we have a responsibility to play an active role in building more just and inclusive societies. It is enriching to share the solutions we are implementing in each company with other female colleagues and to learn from each other,” explained Alfaro.

In this regard, interesting conclusions were shared during the debate, such as the increasing role of women in industry leadership positions or best practices that can help continue to improve this presence. In addition, the participants presented the actions and strategies to be carried out regarding the visibility of women in the financial sector and described the mentoring programs, events, conferences, networking, talent identification and support that WIB intends develop in the future. The network of women from the seven banks that make up the steering group was essential to the launch of the WIB. At the BBVA, the BRG of Mixity, Acting for equalityhas led this initiative since its inception in 2020.

Alejandra Kindelan, future president of the AEB, moderated one of these panels. “Today we were able to perceive the knowledge of the networks of women who propelled the association, and the support of some of the most important financial institutions in the country,” she said. This is one of the aims of this association – to become a financial industry benchmark for diversity and inclusion of women in order to give visibility to female talents and inspire new generations through leaders. “Without a doubt, WIB will respond to the challenges that the banking sector poses to women by identify goals and solutions that promote gender equality in an industry as relevant as ours,” she concluded.
