2/26/04-CFL ALERT: TWO AMERICAN ISM ACTIVISTS ARRESTED WHILE PROTESTING
AGAINST APARTHEID WALL.
Two female activists Huwaida Arraf and Jessica Hanson were arrested while
trying to negotiate with soldiers during a demonstration against the
construction of the apartheid wall in Beit Surik this afternoon. Eye witnesses
reported that the two female American citizens were beaten by the soldiers
during the arrest. Huwaida Arraf was reportedly punched in the face by a
soldier. The demonstration began yesterday when bulldozers started to destroy
all of the olive groves surrounding the village. The demonstrators attempted
to stop the bulldozers from uprooting the remaining olive trees today. The
Israeli army fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the crowd and arrested 15
Palestinians, 2 Israeli activists and a journalist. Huwaida and Jessica were
taken to the nearby Har Adar settlement before being transferred to a police
station in the Givat Ze'ev settlements later in the afternoon. Jessica Hanson
has been released but Huwaida Arraf is still being detained and has been
officially arrested. No court hearing has been scheduled so far.
