CFL ALERT: Support The Democratically Elected President of Palestine Abu Mazin

We have seen an important first step towards Palestinian democracy today. Abu Mazin has been elected with the majority of the vote and will now aim to calm the fears of all Palestinians by establishing a unified government to face the occupation and the upcoming negotiations for peace. It will be difficult for the Palestinians to operate in an atmosphere made more difficult by the road blocks and the constant Israeli incursions in to the West Bank and Gaza. So what can we do to help support a climate of change and peace?

*Call or write your congressman about the support you expect for Abu Mazin in this time of great need. Let your elected officials now that you expect complete support which would include:
-financial grants to support a rebuilding of a police force and civil infrastructure.

-Vocal support for the new president in the senate and congress with the understanding that Israel should not stand in the way of peace.

-Continued aid for health care and food for those most affected by the occupation in Gaza and the West bank.

-A strong call for a halt to all settlement activity. We must show that we do envision a Palestinian State with sovereign borders and independent legislature.

*Congress should declare official support for the democratically elected Abu Mazin and call for peace talks in the next few weeks. The peace talks should be supported by both European and American delegations with the goal of establishing a Palestinian State in 2005.

CFL continues to believe that a One State Solution represents the best chance for Muslims, Jews, and Christians to coexist. However, in view of current developments, we must support the facts on the ground and call for a true chance for a peaceful coexistence. This coexistence will never happen without unbiased support from the United States.
