CFL ALERT: ASK YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TO DEMAND IMMEDIATE ISRAELI WITHDRAWAL FROM PALESTINIAN LAND.

Recently Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon stated that he only agreed to leave Gaza because he received assurances from President Bush that Israel could retain large swaths of land in the West Bank. This week Israeli officials have gone on record as saying that Settlers can move from Gaza to the West Bank. Because the bulk of Israeli settlements are in the West Bank, in effect the Israeli disengagement plan is not disengagement at all but rather a transfer of Israelis from illegal settlements in Gaza to illegal settlements in
the West Bank. Tell your representatives that U.S. sanctioned settlement expansion in the West Bank negates the evacuation from Gaza and the two-state solution, leaving the one state solution as the only viable option.

TALKING POINTS:
*Palestinians have long been skeptical of Israeli plans to leave Gaza because they believed it was a ruse to cement Israel's grip on the West Bank and deny the Palestinians a viable state- They were correct. Prime Minister Sharon and other Israeli officials are saying publicly that they have received assurances from Washington that in return for
evacuating Gaza they can keep large portions of land in the West Bank. Currently, there are 8,000 settlers in Gaza and over 400,000 living in the West Bank. If Israel was serious about making peace, Sharon would begin disengaging from the West Bank instead of making plans to transfer 8000 settlers to the West Bank. Tell your representatives that Israeli facts on the ground in
illegally appropriated Palestinian land have all but destroyed American and Palestinian hopes for a two state solution and that the only viable solution is to support one democratic state with equal social
and human rights for Palestinians and Israelis.

*Tell your representative that Israeli intransigence remains unchecked because this country continues to coddle the Israeli regime as they defy international law, the United Nations, the International Court of Justice and now even agreements they have reached with the Bush
administration. When President Bush told Sharon that Israel could retain some West Bank land under any peace deals with Palestinians, he gave Sharon a green light to continue stealing Palestinian land and he made a mockery out of the Israeli evacuation of the Gaza Strip. Ask your representatives to support legislation declaring the settlements illegal and a major impediment to peace.

*Israeli hegemony in the Middle East continues to threaten U.S. security and U.S. standing in the international community. It is time to separate our support for Israel from our political reality in
Washington; Israeli lobbyists in D.C. have hindered Mideast policy for far too long. Tell your representatives that it is incomprehensible that we continue to destroy our credibility throughout the world and put American lives at risk for the sake of an apartheid nation.
