5/25/04-CFL ALERT: RETIRED MARINE GENERAL ANTHONY ZINNI SAYS NEOCONSERVATIVES
HAVE HIJACKED THE WHITE HOUSE
*Retired Marine General Anthony Zinni gave an interview on CBS's 60 Minutes
last night saying that civilian policymakers in the administration, also known
as neoconservatives, pushed the war on Iraq as a way to make Israel more
secure. He named Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz; Undersecretary of
Defense Douglas Feith; Former Defense Policy Board member Richard Perle;
National Security Council member Eliot Abrams; and Vice President Cheney's
chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby”as those responsible for pushing the war
on Iraq”even though Iraq was contained and posed no threat to the U.S. .
General Zinni said, They promoted it and pushed [the war]¦ even to the point
of creating their own intelligence to match their needs. They should bear the
responsibility.
*Last week Senator Ernest Hollings from South Carolina wrote a column that
appeared in several newspapers that asserted that the U.S. war against Iraq
represented a decision by President Bush to protect Israel and ensure American
Jewish support for his reelection. Senator Hollings said, Bush felt tax cuts
would hold his crowd together and spreading democracy in the Mideast to secure
Israel would take the Jewish vote from the Democrats. Tell your elected
officials that they have a moral obligation to promote and protect Americans
and American interests. Waging war against Iraq has cost over 700 American
lives and 5,500 Iraqi lives”war, torture and cruelty have done nothing to
promote American interests.
*Speak out against the power of neoconservatives to control and manipulate
U.S. policy. Tell your representatives that you are appalled that civilian
policymakers can make decisions about whether to wage war on countries, when
members of the military establishment have warned repeatedly against war.
