CFL ALERT: Palestinians met with Egyptian mediators in Gaza on December 16 to discuss a Palestinian-Israeli ceasefire. Palestinians have indicated willingness to accept a ceasefire if it is a joint Palestinian-Israeli endeavor. Israelis responded by ruling out the possibility of stopping attacks on Palestinians. Ask the president and your representatives to demand that Israel accept a ceasefire.

TALKING POINTS
*In the past 10 weeks there have been no Palestinian attacks inside of Israel, yet Israeli attacks against Palestinians have increased, resulting in 21 Palestinians killed and 55 injured in the last two weeks alone.

*Palestinians are willing to commit to a genuine ceasefire if Israelis reciprocate. Egyptian mediators quoted Palestinians as saying: "The position remains that there can be no truce for free; a truce should have a price, a political price on behalf of the Palestinian people and not cosmetic measures on the ground."

*On December 16 Secretary of State Powell said that if Palestinians strike a ceasefire, the United States can press Israel to take reciprocal measures. However, the United States refuses to press Israel to accept any truce.

*A report released recently by the National Intelligence Council under the direction of CIA Director George Tenet states that, at the very least, an agreement leading to a "cold peace" between Palestinians and Israelis could improve the Arab world's attitude toward the United States and eliminate any excuses by Arab countries to implement political reforms.

*Tell the president and your representatives that as the largest sole donors of Israeli welfare, we have a moral obligation to steer the Israelis toward a just and peaceful agreement with the Palestinians. Remind your representatives that peace between Israelis and Palestinians will eliminate ill will against the United States throughout the Middle East and Muslim world. Tell them that they protect Americans and American interests by supporting peace.
