CFL ALERT: ASK YOUR REPRESENTATIVES NOT TO DELAY AID TO PALESTINIANS.
On Wednesday, President Bush pledged $350 million in aid to the Palestinians
to bolster security and economic development. Bush's State of the Union aid
pledge is meant to demonstrate U.S. support for newly elected Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas.
TALKING POINTS
*State Department officials have said that this aid package is meant to
finance a wide range of projects in Palestinian areas including the
construction of homes, improving the infrastructure and providing social
services. Take a moment to write your representatives and tell them that you
expect them to support this aid package and let them know that you support it
going directly to the Palestinian Authority.
*In the past, U.S. aid has flowed through nongovernmental organizations
because key U.S. lawmakers have opposed providing direct aid to the
Palestinians. Often, the money ends up in the hands of NGO's unable to act on
behalf of the people on the street.
*Ask your representatives to ensure that aid is spent on Palestinian
initiatives and that this money does not end up in Israeli hands. Following
Arafat's death, President Bush provided $20 million directly
to the Palestinian Authority, however, that money was given on the condition
that it only used to pay Israeli utility bills.
*Tell your representative that it is hard to be optimistic when we have seen
so many "good starts" end up in complete deadlocks and
violence because of Israel's inability to follow international law and
universally accepted norms of democracy. Ask your representatives to support a
just resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,
including Jerusalem as a capitol for all religions, the right of refugees to
return to stolen land, the right for all those whose lives have been affected
to receive compensation. Ask your representatives
if they believe that the right to live in peace with life and liberty applies
to everyone—including Palestinians.
