CFL ALERT: CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES AND ASK THEM TO CONDEMN THE ISRAELI
CITIZENSHIP LAW
Last week Amnesty International condemned attempts by the Israeli Knesset to
place restrictions on who Israeli-Arabs can and cannot marry. Amnesty said
that this legislation "formally institutionalizes a form of racial
discrimination based on ethnicity or nationality". Contact your
representatives and ask them to oppose the Israeli "Citizenship Law."
TALKING POINTS
*Tell your representatives that you feel that the "Citizenship Law" is state
sanctioned ethnic cleansing. It is an attempt by the Israeli government to
force its Arab citizens out of the country by placing xenophobic restrictions
on who they can marry. This law has already forced Arab-Israeli citizens to
leave their homes and move to the Palestinian territories with their spouses.
For the couples that do decide to stay in Israel, their spouses have no social
rights, no medical care and they are forced to live like criminals although
they have done nothing wrong. Ask your representatives why they support a
country that regularly legislates racist and backwards laws meant only to
discriminate against Arab and Muslim citizens. Tell your representatives that
these are not the actions of a democracy; rather they are the actions of an
apartheid government bent on eliminating its Arab presence. Demand that
American tax dollars not be spent funding Israeli racism and extremism.
*The head of the Shin Bet has said that this law is meant to prevent terror
attacks inside of Israel, however, Israeli and international human rights
organizations around the world have said that this legislation is not
motivated by security concerns but that it is one among many Israeli policies
meant to preserve a Jewish majority in the land even at the expense of the
human rights of the Arab population.
