US CAMPAIGN TO END THE ISRAELI OCCUPATION/CFL ALERT: URGE BALANCE ON BIASED BRIEFING ON ISRAEL’S APARTHEID WALL

On 2/10/04 Dennis Ross and David Makovsky, both biased towards Israel, will be briefing congress on the apartheid wall being created on stolen Palestinian land. Please take a moment to let your representatives know that this issue concerns you and that you are disappointed that the information provided to congress on Tuesday will not be balanced.

TAKE ACTION

*Rep. Ros-Lehtinen is holding a briefing on Tuesday, February 10, 11:00 AM, 2200 Rayburn House Office Building on “Israel’s construction of a security fence in the West Bank.” The only presenters at the briefing will be Ambassador Dennis Ross and Mr. David Makovsky, both of whom work for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (a pro-Israeli/Zionist Institute). Email, call and/or fax the office of Rep.Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chair of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and Central Asia of the House International Relations Committee and of other representatives who serve on this committee and demand that they request a balanced and fair briefing.

TALKING POINTS:

*Briefings sponsored by congress should be balanced and include diverse perspectives on controversial issues so that our representatives are adequately informed of policy issues and their implications.

* The briefing sponsored by Rep. Ros-Lehtinen on Israel’s apartheid wall on Tuesday will be unbalanced because its list of speakers represent the views of only one partisan organization.

*Ambassador Dennis Ross and Mr. David Makovsky both work for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP), an institution founded by staff and supporters of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which describes itself as “America’s pro-Israel lobby.”

*Representatives of WINEP, described by some as AIPAC’s “think-tank spin-off”, are not capable of articulating a balanced view on Israel’s Wall. The list of speakers should include representatives of organizations that support a US foreign policy toward Israel/Palestine that is based on human rights and international law rather than on support for military occupation. Organizations that are critical of the human rights violations caused by Israel’s Wall should be invited to address this briefing too.
