CFL ALERT: ASK YOUR REPS TO COSPONSOR THE RACHEL CORRIE RESOLUTION (HOUSE
CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 111).
****Upon introduction of the resolution by Rep. Brian Baird [D WA-3], the
Rachel Corrie Resolution was sent to the House International Relations
Committee.
As of July 1, the resolution had 42 cosponsors (see below for a list). The
resolution is unlikely to move out of the committee without a critical mass of
Representatives who sign the resolution as cosponsors. Our goal is to get as
many Members of Congress as possible to sign on as cosponsors.
TALKING POINTS
*As we approach Independence Day, it is important to pay our respects to those
American citizens who died to protect the values that make our country great.
Rachel Corrie died protecting the home of a family from being demolished by
the army of a foreign military occupation. In so doing,
Rachel was defending such American values as freedom, dignity, and the right
to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
*Rachel Corrie was an American citizen killed by a foreign army and a U.S.
investigation is necessary to determine the circumstances of her death and
ensure that this type of incident does not happen again.
*According to the June 26th edition of the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz, the
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has concluded its investigation into Rachel
Corrie’s death and "no disciplinary measures will be taken against any of
those involved in the incident in which Corrie was killed." The IDF Southern
Command concluded that the driver of the bulldozer did not see Rachel and did
not intentionally run over her, despite eyewitness accounts to the contrary.
The contradiction between the IDF and eyewitness accounts makes an independent
U.S. investigation into Rachel’s death even more imperative now.
